Transactional-Meets-Marketing Email: The Best of Both Worlds
Can MailChimp’s Mandrill replace regular MailChimp marketing emails?
As with most things in email marketing, the short answer is, “it depends”. It depends on a number of factors like …
- What precisely do you intend to track, and what value does that information add to your marketing efforts?
- How much will additional tracking cost over time compared to any benefits derived? Remember to include the cost for both installation and analysis of the data.
- Can your website handle the additional overhead incurred by the added technology required to track visitor behavior from email?
When all is said and done, perhaps a better solution is to revisit your existing transactional email messages, and integrate your marketing message into them.

Can MailChimp’s Mandrill Replace Regular MailChimp Marketing Emails?
Replacing MailChimp marketing emails with Mandrill isn’t necessary. Mandrill is part of your MailChimp paid account as of April 2016.
Mandrill will now require you to have a paid MailChimp account, which means a minimum fee of $10 a month. Plus, if you use Mandrill, you’ll need to purchase blocks of email credits starting at $20 for 25,000 email credits.
MailChimp + Mandrill will cost a minimum of $30/month once you merge your accounts beginning April 2016.
Basically, this will help Mandrill shed the many free and tiny users whose sites generate fewer than a few thousand transactions monthly.
I mean, seriously, if your site doesn’t generate at least a few thousand transactions monthly, you could probably get away with a much less robust (and less expensive) platform.
Try integrating your marketing messages into your existing transactional emails first.
Your audience will love you. Your website will love you. And you will definitely increase conversions in the process.
